Julian English meets Brendan Hudson, founder of PDS Dental Laboratory in West Yorkshire, about his spectacular lab’s plans for a digital future
PDS Dental Laboratory is a full-service, innovative and state-of-the-art dental laboratory providing its services and unique products to dentists throughout the UK. Located within a mill complex, natural light bathes this converted former car showroom, with its glass front creating ideal surroundings for high quality laboratory work. Within this spectacular building is a private two surgery dental practice, A-List Dentistry. This state-of the art practice has implant specialists, three dentists, an orthodontist, clinical dental technician and a hygienist. The mix of skills within this practice also means that patients can be offered same-day crown and implant supported dentures. The place is as busy as it is striking. During my visit, a stream of patients came in and out of the dental practice and the laboratory dental technicians filled the space.
Interviewee, clinical dental technician and founder of PDS Dental Laboratory, Brendan Hudson, regularly saw denture patients for fitting and adjustments throughout the visit. PDS Dental Laboratory is located in Greengates, on the Bradford and Leeds border in West Yorkshire. ‘This successful laboratory is built on providing high quality service, excellent communication and work that is delivered on time to meet your patients’ needs,’ says Brendan, who started the laboratory in 1990 and quickly grew it to become one of the UK’s leading dental laboratory operations.
PDS Dental Laboratory supplies more than 1,100 dentists across the UK every month. It provides a complete solution for dental practices. Since its inception, PDS Dental Laboratory has continued to grow from strength to strength to be highly respected within dentistry for its excellence. Up-to-the minute equipment, procedures and innovations are the hallmark of the laboratory and the forward-thinking team. It leads the industry by constantly challenging the boundaries of dental technology for practical and aesthetic purposes. And to prove the point, PDS Dental Laboratory has made some major changes in order to develop the laboratory into a profession-leading, digital dentistry fortress. The primary change has been collaboration following its acquisition by dental dealer, The Dental Directory, in 2016.
Providing high quality customer service is, and always has been, fundamental to its offering. The team prides itself on being available to help and discuss individual cases. They also ensure collection and delivery is fast and efficient. In order to continue to offer excellent solutions to customers, PDS Dental Laboratory is changing. It has embraced the future – the digital future – and has invested heavily in digitising its operation. Brendan Hudson explained: ‘We now have a digital hub within the laboratory. We have four 3D printers, the Wieland/Ivoclar Zenotec CAD/CAM milling machines, two Amann Girrbach Ceramill CAD/CAM milling machines and the 3shape digital scanner. This scans the impression sent by a practice. A printed model is produced from the scan. This can be worked on straight away. It cuts out the plaster room, as well as reducing inefficiencies and inaccuracies. Scanned work produces a better fit, and fewer remakes, and it’s a cleaner and more efficient way of doing things and therefore more profitable.’ PDS Dental Laboratory has spent the last nine months trialing digital equipment and systems to perfect it before going out to the market with an offering. The plan is set and PDS Dental Laboratory is working on the right infrastructure to be able to scale up and deliver an excellent service to dental practices throughout the country.
Described as the ultimate dental experience, A-List Dentistry is a high-class private dental practice offering advanced dentistry services, including implants, dentures, orthodontics, endodontics, periodontics and facial aesthetics, as well as restorative and aesthetic dentistry. At the forefront of dental technology, the practice benefits from being juxtaposed to the laboratory, offering an important edge over other private practices.
PDS Dental Laboratory is a DAMAS (Dental Appliance Manufacturers Audit Scheme) accredited organisation. It has been externally recognised for its success in consistently and accurately delivering products and services to meet customers’ requirements. Founder, Brendan, is a member of the British Institute of Dental and Surgical Technologies, DLA and ADI. After qualifying from Kitson College, Leeds in 1988, he founded PDS Dental Laboratory in 1990. Now the business has grown from a single-man company to one with more than 120 employees and a fleet of eight delivery vans. PDS Dental Laboratory also has selected couriers who collect and deliver work nationwide on a premium next working day service. The state-of-the-art laboratory covers 18,000 square feet and the dental work created here goes all over the UK and internationally. The spectacular building development took three months to complete. Brendan and his senior staff were heavily involved in the ergonomics of it.
Providing high quality customer service and a full range of products and services are fundamental goals of PDS Dental Laboratory. It offers superb workmanship from an excellent team of dental technicians using the very latest in technology. Following its acquisition by The Dental Directory, PDS Dental Laboratory has invested heavily in digital technology to stay ahead of the curve by delivering a fast, efficient, accurate service and a high-quality product to the UK dental profession. There is nowhere in the country that has a high quality dental practice linked to a major digital dental laboratory like PDS Dental Laboratory. The place looks a million dollars, it is seriously busy and incorporates a high-end dental practice. This combination makes PDS Dental Laboratory a company to do business with.
